I certainly hope Aces will be resurrected. I actually miss the flamewars and the trolls.

Have anyone heard from Brian and Johan that they are still interested in aceshardware?

It was announced by Brian, although fairly short notice (couple of days before it went down)

Yes, both posted here and on the old forum (but all posts after june 30 are lost due to this host messing up its backups).
Anyway, Johan is setting up the new server, but IIRC it wouldnt be up until sometime in august after they return from holiday.

Just curious if Brian, Johan, or anyone else had any updates on if Aceshardware would be coming back up or not? Thanks.

So, is there any hope of the old forum ever coming back?

At the moment I am head of a server project funded by the government at the university where I work, and this is gobbling up all my time, including most of my supposely "free time" . I fear I won't be able to revive the forum in the near term. The trouble is that Sybase database which is a pain to get up and running on the current versions of linux. And migrating it to another db (mysql) is a lot of work, for which I don't have time right now.
So the solution will have to come from elsewhere.

It's not like the old aceshardware had any new articles for over a year. What was so good about the old forums that freeforums lacks?

Speed and a superb threaded view most of all.
Then some other features like the ability to ignore certain posters.
On the downside it lacked a decent search and some features commonly found on PHPbb and similar boards.
@Johan, I think I suggested this before, but if so, I don't remember the answer; wouldn't it be an idea to opensource the forum code? Maybe someone will step up to the plate and fix the issues. There is no shortage of forum software, but none works like Aces' forum did, so I'm pretty sure it would have some appeal beyond just this site.
