If my AM2 motherboard (Asus M2A-MVP) "officially" supports only Phenom 8600, 9500 and 9600 (all rev B2, 95W parts), what are my chances of getting a rev. B3 X3 or X4 Phenom working correctly but as an "unknown CPU"?

Also, is it really possible for the BIOS of an older AM2 motherboard (Asus M2N-X PLUS) to support one of each of the X3, X4, rev. B2 , rev. B3, 65W and 95W Phenoms but not all of them (forget the 125W parts)?

Thanks in advance.

I can imagine that the power electronics on the motherboard don't support 125W and it has nothing to do with the BIOS...?

I tried a 9850 in an older BIOS and was not very successful ... I had to refresh to a BIOS that specifically stated new processor support.

That's what i meant by "forget the 125W parts", i am aware of the power constraints. What i was trying to ask is: is it possible for a 95W, rev B3, X4 Phenom to be supported while another 95W, rev B3, X3 or X4 is not (even as an "unknows cpu")?

And more important: is Asus in this case using the rev B2 to B3 transition to enforce the good and old "planned obsolescence" by not releasing a new BIOS?

And which was the latest CPU supported by the older BIOS?

Did the older BIOS support at least rev. B2 Phenoms? Or did it support only X2 A64s? Or did it already support other B3 Phenoms but not specifically the 9850?

A new bios may be neded for xx50 Phenom microcode changes, so it is completely possible.
