Hi,Friends
I need some help from you all.My computer has gone crazy it seems.I have purchased new machine at my place but the problem is that suddenly my machine got hanged initially it got started and my antivirus was getting updated and suddenly it crashed down it was just as if it got hanged all things came to stand still.I tried to restart the machine and a message appeared :-
Windows could not start because following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32|CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by restarting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

But no use friends I have tried this too.What to do now?
Do I have to Format my machine?
Please help!!! Any suggestions????

You have a hosed install now, you can either try to manually replace the files one by one from a known good machine or reinstall. MS repairs are worthless, it is a biblical-class miracle if they actually work, they are best ignored completely.

I would back up your data and do a clean install, or better yet, grab Ubuntu and upgrade.

as Charlie said the first thing to do is to forget about the MS "tools"

if you have invaluable data to recover: buy an external case to host the broken disk and plug it in in a working PC with e-sata / usb

something that worked well for me in a desperate situation (the disk was not recognized even if plugged in another working machine) is Runtime Software Disk Explorer for NTFS http://www.runtime.org/diskexplorer.htm
it's quite slow (it took something like 2 full days for around 60 GB of data with a lot of small files) but was incredibly effective to recover my data

they have also another solution: Get Data Back it's faster overall but you have an initial lengthy pass , you wait a lot of time before to see what it has found, with Disk Explorer you have quickly a view of your folders and files and you can select which ones you want to recover first

Another vote for Get Data Back. If your data is valuable, it's worth it.

Oh, BTW, weren't you the one expoinding on backups. If you have been backing up regularly, then this isn't an issue--or is this another of your stealth posts ;)

Hell, that ain't no big deal to fix to a professional. These people are giving you the hard way to recover simply because its a real pain in the ass to teach you how to fix that problem. I personally would go in with a windows pe disk and fix the system at the exact point of the failure then try to ghost the hard drive over to a new one. But that isn't an option for most people.

The underlying likely truth is that you probably have an impending hard drive failure. More times than not its a sign of a corrupt mft due to a failing hard drive sector. Problem is that you can fix the problem with a restore disk after you recover your data but that hard drive is likely toast.

How old is that machine?
