I put this question to someone today, and received a reply this evening.

" I wonder how much energy it requires to make PV solar panels, compared to how much energy they are likely to generate on top of a roof "

It all depends on the exposure situation (sunshine) and on the type of module.
Most manufacturers will tell the consumer frankly the energetic amortisation time, provided they know the mounting situation.

For a thin-bed module based on Cd/Te technology the energetic amortisation time is about 9 month.
Mono- and poly-crystalline modules have a longer amortisation time, between 18-24 month.
Note that the energetic ammortisation time for a PV module is not to be mixed up with the financial ammortisation of the entire installation.
The energetic amortisation times as well as the financial are being reduced by about 10% per year at average thanks to better technologies.

I watched Chalie Gay talking about the technology on Youtube a number of months back.
