This is hard to believe... When Ebay bought skype, not only did they not acquire the P2P IP used in it, they didn't even get all the source code!

Yes, insane. They got little more than a trademark. eBay got shafted with that purchase and did well to dump it to some other poor bastards.

I think Skype is overrated anyway. There are plenty of SIP alternatives around.

I guess I'm most shocked that Skype did not try to create a new VOIP implementation or license the source from someone else.

I wondered about that too. I guess the problem would be that a new implementation would be incompatible with a gazillion installs out there. But even so, they could roll out a version that includes both new and old implementation and "flip" the switch once the majority of users have a new enough version.

It took them almost 18 months to produce a minor update for linux (one that finally supports pulse audio)., though its still in beta and still lacks a host of features. EVen if its just a single developer working full time on the linux client, he should be fired.

You guys should stop being so casual about these things.

Act involved! Show your feelings! Don't be afraid to judge!

If all they have is a .lib, then they are probably at the mercy of their vendor to deliver libraries for various platforms. It's a very unusual situation for a major company, that's for sure.
