There is something that I miss a lot in Vista interface I must say. What ever happened to that 'up' folder icon that used to be in windows explorer. Is there any way to get that back, or is it gone forever? On my keyboard, the 'backspace' key used to do the same thing in older windows interfaces. I used to find it very quick to navigate back up through the tree of folders using my backspace key. Now I have neither. The button with the 'up folder' is going, and so is the backspace shortcut. Has anyone succesfully found a way to re-introduce them into Vista interface? And while I am bitching, why do folders suddenly re-set themselves in Vista windows explorer, because they think there are photos or music in them? So instead of size, date, type, name,... you get artist, album,... or date taken on,.... ? ? ? ? When the folder obviously contains word or excel documents. Vista is a real mess from an interface point of view. A giant leap backways. gareth |

If you found how to make backspace "up" a folder, please tell me :D The substitute for the "up" button is the address bar itself, you may click on the name of the parent folder to go there, the ">" button gives you more options to navigate. The backspace now goes back to the previous folder, if you is only using keyboard or mouse it's ok, but when using both at same time this "feature" may cause some trouble. If you want kind with custom option, "alt" to show the menu (some miss this trick) Tools Folder Options. |

I'll let you know for sure. How MS manage to throw away core functionality like that is beyond me. Yet add a million more things to word, that I will never use. They probably had some social scientist or artist or some bs like that, decide that the up folder was a mistake. I think the address bar is the biggest load of b**** going. Talk about making things too simple, for the more experienced windows user. Another thing that is causing me huge problems in Vista, is with USB keys. It seems to be taking it forever to copy or delete anything from/to the key. I only noticed this yesterday, as I was using an older WinXP laptop, which doesn't suffer from this problem at all. gareth |

When you want to move or copy anything in Vista is breaks your balls. Why have Microsoft got to make life so damn tough for everyone? In windows XP, copying or moving a folder or a file from one place to another, didn't mean you had to take a tea break and come back. Is this indexing s*** getting in the way. What is their @~+ problem? Is it illegal now to do an honest days work? It is legal clause they have drafted someplace that I didn't read? The world is crumbling to bits I tell you. Why does it say access denied in Foxit when I try to install the Jpeg decoder update? Operating System, Windows Vista Home Premium. |

probably have to run it as administrator (right click). But really, there is a service pack out that will cure all your vista woes, like speed, interface, security.. grab it here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download |

Thanks, it is a work system I have to use . . . one government software that doesn't run with anything else. Even the Mac guys were kicking up... no Mac version either apparently. gareth. |

Please navigate to find Foxit Reader.exe application, right-click to "Run as Admin" and then update. By default it is: C:\Program files\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader. Got this tip from foxit support, and it worked. gareth |

I totally agree on the Backspace issue in Vista, one of many irritating UI changes in Vista. Also the resetting to pictures etc... the biggest, though, is the lack of "Search..." in the popup menu when you right click any folder. Can anyone please tell me how to quickly search for filenames within a directory I am exploring in Windows Explorer? If I enter the filename in the search box all hell breaks lose... it takes many clicks until I can perform a specific search, and only after changing options before hand to see the menu so I can actually call up the advanced options etc. In XP, I right click a directory and enter the file to search for and it would search the file tree from that directory. In Vista... I haven't figured it out after almost a year of use now. Another one... select a directory in the left folder view... now use keyboard to move up/down in the file tree. The right pane will not follow, so you now see a folder in the left view and the contents of another folder in the right view... scary! Has anyone checked how all this works in Windows 7? |

To search for filename on that box type for example filename:*.pdf, any attribute may be searched in this way, if the folder is music and files have author attribute you may do author:Michael Jackson |

Another gripe: When you get a File Open dialog in any program, XP positions the cursor in the Filename field so you can start typing anything, including changing drive, directory etc. Vista positions the marker in the combo box at the top where you can't type, you have to tab down or click the filename field with the mouse. :-( Not to mention that the file dialog is incompatible with any dialog extensions done by software for all earlier Windows versions. |

The drop box at the top that shows current directory, and when you click it it activates all hard drives from sleep mode, which locks the computer a while... :-) |

Found, here it was fast, but for some reason it didn't show the drivers, instead it showed MRU internet address. It's something new for me, in fact, I never used that combo the ability to navegate directorys clicking on the > next to the name on the address bar always was good enough. |
